Picture of Bailey Island BridgeThe Permits and Cultural Resources Unit is responsible for reviewing all MAINEDOT projects and determining the need for environmental permits. The Unit prepares and coordinates all documents for submittal to the appropriate agencies for permit approval.  These are obtained from the United States Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) under the Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) under the Natural Resources Protection Act; and the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC), under chapter 10; Migratory Bird Permits from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and Essential Habitat Permits from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W). The Permits and Cultural Resources Unit is also responsible for ensuring that the MAINEDOT complies with all mandates relating to the protection of cultural resources, as stipulated in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966.
